The assailant who is guarding Marta listens uneasily to the distant conversation that is taking place between Dmitri and a stranger. He is surprised by the apparent tranquility with which his boss is addressing an intruder who, logically, should be putting the plan at serious risk, but from what he can understand with his limited Spanish, there seems to be something like a violence-free negotiation going on. He relies heavily on Dmitri and knows that he will do what must be done, but these unexpected circumstances have put him in a state of heightened alertness.
He watches the woman, who is now sitting on the bed staring at the barrel of the gun that has never ceased to point at her for a single moment. It is evident that it is not necessary to cover her mouth so she doesnât yell. She must have taken stock of her situation and now understands that she must obey without question. The attacker realizes that she is quite attractive, despite the helpless look that she displays. The first of his daily erotic fantasies begins to take shape in his mind when the authoritative voice of his boss cuts through them abruptly.

The assailants, after overcoming their initial surprise, start cursing in their language until Dmitri commands them authoritatively to remain silent. Then he goes to Marta and speaks with a coldness that makes the young woman shudder.
âIf you want to live to see your husband and your daughter, you will tell us what we need to do to get out of here.â
âThe house is fully computerized. My husband wanted it that way when we built it. We can turn the lights or air conditioning on and off, start any appliance, or lock the doors remotely with an app that we have on our smartphones. Let me go to my room and Iâll open the door.â
âLetâs go there then.â
In the master bedroom, on the night table is Martaâs last-generation smartphone. She opens the app with trembling fingers, and the options menu is displayed on the screen. She clicks on the option to unlock the doors, and then the group moves toward the door, but it is still locked.
âI donât understand,â stutters Marta. âThis app has never failed.â
Dmitri can understand it. His mind, streamlined by risk, is running at 100 percent and has figured out that the inhibitor of
